The 2023 McDonald’s Fiji’s Coral Coast Sevens will be bigger and better attracting teams from as far as the United States, Japan, Australia and New Zealand.

The tournament was officially launched in Nadi yesterday with McDonald’s taking up the naming rights sponsorship. Coral Coast 7s chairman Jay Whyte said they started the count down to the tournament yesterday with 77 days to go.

Whyte said they were very fortunate in 2020 to be able to run the tournament just prior to the closure of borders. “Obviously we have had a little bit of a hiatus due to COVID-19,” he said.

“Now we are in a position to restart and a big thank you goes to McDonald’s for coming on board as our naming rights partner for this year and for the next three years.

“We also thank Ben Gollings, who is a former tournament ambassador. He came to play in the tournament in 2012 and then became the tournament ambassador the following year.

“It is amazing that in 10 years he went from being a player to now being the head coach of the Fiji 7s team and winning the World Cup Sevens in South Africa earlier this year.”

The tournament will be played over three days from January 12-14. Police is the defending men’s champions while the Fijiana team is the defending women’s champion.

“We want to let the general public know that we have a huge interest from international teams for 2023.

“We are going to have record prizemoney.

“One of the things that must be highlighted is that these sorts of events only come to life through the valuable support of sponsors, namely McDonald’s and all the other major and minor sponsors that put their faith in us to deliver a tournament which is really the only major event now for the Coral Coast.”
