The overall indications of virus cases, hospitalisation and death data point to a positive response in our overall COVID response, says Health Ministry permanent secretary Dr James Fong.

He made the comment while delivering a COVID-19 update for the 48 hours to 8am Wednesday, where he announced 50 new cases for the same period.

Dr Fong said of the 50 new cases, 35 were recorded on Tuesday and 15 in the 24 hours ending 8am Wednesday.

He said Central Division cases constituted 71 per cent of the cumulative total cases nationally, with the Western Division making up 28 per cent and one per cent in the Northern and Eastern divisions.

“The 13 new cases recorded in the North are quarantine cases that are part of the repatriation program for the Northern Division,” he said.

“There is ongoing surveillance conducted for all repatriates.”

Dr Fong said there were no new deaths to the virus and there had been 673 deaths in Fiji, with 671 of the deaths during the outbreak that started in April this year.

He said the epidemic in the Western Division was lower and had a delayed disease peak with lower cumulative numbers compared with the Central Division.

Dr Fong said the seven-day average of new cases per day was 24 cases per day or 27 cases per million population per day.

“The ministry continues monitoring other indicators such as test positivity, hospitalisations and deaths to track the progress of the outbreak and it is noted that there is a downward trend across all indicators of the COVID-19 epidemic in Fiji.”

A total of 595,597 adults in Fiji or 96.3 per cent had received their first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine and 537,398 or 86.9 per cent were fully vaccinated.
