SUPERVISOR of Elections Mohammed Saneem has come under fire for making it mandatory for 600,000-plus Fijians to submit their original or certified copies of birth certificates when they re-register for voter identification cards.

The Fiji Labour Party said the requirement to re-register could be deemed “unlawful”.

The National Federation Party labelled the move “scandalous”.

The decision caused an outcry on social media with many people asking the Fijian Elections Office (FEO), on their Facebook page, why Fijians were being inconvenienced and burdened with additional costs.

The FEO said the birth certificate requirement was to help FEO confirm the details of the voter on the EVR (electronic voter registration) system.
