Frustrated residents and members of the business community in Labasa are pleading with Energy Fiji Ltd to address the frequent power cuts they have been facing during the cane crushing season.

They said for the past two months, electricity supply would be interrupted every week, and on some occasions up to three times a day and for long periods of time.

On August 17, residents in most areas around town were without electricity for about three hours in the evening.

“We have more power cuts now compared to the beginning of the year and we hope EFL can fix this because it’s frustrating,” said Alesi Dinakama, a resident of the Western Wreckers area.

Another resident, Sushila Wati, who lives in the Wailevu area echoed similar sentiments.

“Every week we have no power for a few hours and I don’t know what the cause is, but it would be really good if the situation is fixed,” she said.

Other residents in Lajonia, Tuatua, Delailabasa and town areas also said the same.

Prakash Pillay, a businessman in town who runs a drapery shop said he was worried about his electrical appliances.

“We don’t receive notice to these power cuts so our appliances can get affected because the power just goes off and on without any warning and it’s really frustrating,” he said.
