Opposition party leaders attacked the make-up of state-owned enterprise boards yesterday in the wake of recent research pointing to the under-representation of women.

Opposition Leader Sitiveni Rabuka said there was widespread perception that the wellbeing and future of the people of Fiji were governed by unelected allies of the Government.

National Federation Party general secretary Seini Nabou said the recent Fiji Women’s Rights Movement’s survey — which found women and indigenous Fijians were under-represented in state-owned enterprise boards — raised serious questions about state-owned enterprise board appointments.

Fiji Labour Party leader and former prime minister Mahendra Chaudhry said ethnic groups that made up Fijian society needed to “be fairly represented in these boards”.

He said appointments should be on merit with due recognition for maintaining gender balance and membership of multiple boards “should not be permitted”.
