OCEANIA National Olympic Committees (ONOC) president Dr Robin Mitchell has urged national federations to use the organisations development program during the International Boxing Association (AIBA) Continental Forum in Sigatoka last week.

Dr Mitchell gave a presentation on the Oceania Sports Education Programme (OSEP) during the forum, which offers courses on administration, coaching, strength and conditioning, and team management.

“The OSEP courses are solutions you need to take advantage of,” Dr Mitchell said.

He highlighted the need to hold such a meeting in the Oceania, saying boxing is an important sport for the region but they had slipped behind in terms of performance levels, and shared on how Oceania Hockey Federation and Oceania Rugby have successfully integrated OSEP courses into their training and education programs.

He also referred to Fiji Volleyball Federation’s coaching pathway structure as an example of how national federations have taken training to the community and village level.

For national federations that needed assistance with formulating and developing strategic plans, Dr Mitchell said ONOC had two tools which could assist with the process.

“We have the Readiness Assessment Tool (RAT) and the UMAP (Understanding, Managing, Assessing and Planning tool) which act as both a diagnostic tool and a baseline for developing strategic plans.”
