IT IS important that people in the Pacific honour the relationship they have with the ocean, says Minister for Forestry Osea Naiqamu.

He made this comment in his capacity as acting Minister for Fisheries at the World Ocean Day at My Suva Park in Nasese, Suva, today.

The theme of the event was ‘gender and oceans’.

More than 500 people were part of the event, including members of the Fiji Navy, tertiary, primary and high school students.

“It goes without saying that here in Fiji and the Pacific, our people have a long and deep relationship with the ocean,” Mr Naiqamu said.

“It is only right to honour, respect and give full attention to the significant role the oceans has played in our livelihoods, our environment and our economy.”
