A village in Ra has gone into 14 days of lockdown after a positive case of COVID-19 was detected there.
A 22-year-old man, who lived at Narere in Nasinu, arrived at Nailuva Village on Tuesday after crossing the Logani checkpoint with another person.
Both arrived at Korovou Town in a carrier and hired a taxi to enter Ra.
“They did some shopping at a shop here in Ra and split up, with one going to Nailuva and the other travelling to Nabalasere Village,” said a villager who sought anonymity.
“We questioned the person who came to our village here in Nailuva and he said he asked officers at the checkpoint and they were let through. Now, we have a positive case here and all the villagers are scared because this is what we were fearing all the time.”
The second villager was tracked at Nabalasere and swabbed on Wednesday.
The Gone Turaga na Tui Nalawa, Ratu Epeli Niudamu, requested all the people of Ra not to let their guard down.
“I urge all villagers in the Ra Province, on behalf of the Bose Vanua o Ra, to be once again on high alert and continue to take necessary precautionary measures,” he said.
“Please don’t allow unknown visitors in to our villages and villagers with no clear travel history coming to the village should not be allowed. Villagers coming from lockdown areas such as the Central Division should be reported to the police as soon as possible if there is no evidence from the Ministry of Health of their coming.”
