Sheik Sahib is on a mission to help people. The 49-year-old Justice of Peace says ever since he was a young boy growing up in Naviyago, Lautoka, he was always encouraged to help people.

He said he credits this lifelong endeavour for community work to his parents.

“They always old me, ‘keep up your good work, keep helping the people and you will get blessings from the people’,” he said.

“I have been volunteering and doing community work for 23 years now because of their teachings and encouragement.

“I love helping people in my community because it brings me a lot of happiness.”

“In my 23 years of community work, I’ve worked with the Fiji Red Cross, the Fiji Muslim League and other organisations that have needed my help.

“When I’m helping people, I never see their religion or race.”

Today, Sheik is an accomplished community worker and vividly recalls his humble beginnings as a labourer.

Leaving school at Form Five, Sheik became a sugar cane labourer to help his family.

“That was one of the hardest times for me, my two brothers and three sisters,” he said.

“I never thought I would be where I am today if it wasn’t for the big support I received from my parents. They would always encourage me.”

Sheik decided to leave school and help his father with the family’s sugarcane farm.

“That became my blessing and through it I was able to help people in our community.

“That is why I’m here doing my job to the best of my ability.”

He says he has no intention of quitting a community volunteer.

“I’m looking forward to helping the people of Fiji even if I spend hours away from home.

“I make sure I give my service to everyone.”

He adds anyone could be a community worker if one was willing to put in the time.

“To all the JP’s and volunteers in Fiji please keep up the good work.

“Not everybody can be volunteers because it means you have to give up your time but if you do volunteer you must stay committed.

“There will be times where you will have to sacrifice family time but in the end you and your family will greatly benefit.”
