The OlyWhites have made a perfect start to their Tokyo Olympics campaign with a famous win over South Korea.

Striker Chris Wood scored in the 76th minute to clinch an invaluable 1-0 victory over the Asian champions at Ibaraki Kashima Stadium on Thursday.

The lone goal secured New Zealand’s first-ever win in men’s football at the Olympics, after previous best draws in Beijing in 2008 and London in 2012.

Wood was initially flagged for offside after a low-driven shot from midfielder Joe Bell struck a South Korean defender and fell into the Burnley marksman’s path.

But the marginal decision was correctly overturned by the video assistant referee, securing one of the country’s biggest results in men’s football.

“It’s obviously a historic win. It’s a big moment for the game in New Zealand,” coach Danny Hay said.

“I think we have been starting to show over recent times that we are capable of competing on the international stage at Fifa tournaments.
