HAVING spent only six months in the sport of weighlifting, David Oliver won a silver medal at the Australian and Oceania Masters Championships last Saturday.
According to a statement issued today by Weightlighting Fiji, Oliver who is Fiji’s only Masters lifter was reported to have lifted 55Kg in the Snatch and 72Kg in the Clean and Jerk to give him a total of 127Kg.
This was his first international competition in which he competed in the open category in the 50-54 years age bracket of the 105Kg weight category.
Oliver said it was challenging because it was his first competition but the officials and fellow athletes were really supportive.
“I would like to thank my coaches, Della and Henry Elder, and Weightlifting Fiji for the opportunity to compete,” Oliver said.
The Australian Masters saw approximately 120 athletes compete from countries like Australia, India, New Zealand, Mongolia, Singapore, and Malaysia.
