A WORKSHOP on ISO 45001:2018 occupational health and safety management systems was held in Suva last week.

The workshop allowed its 45 participants to learn how to integrate other aspects of health and safety such as worker wellness and wellbeing.

Participants were from the Fiji Ships and Heavy Industries Ltd (FSHIL) and Fiji Ports Corporation Ltd.

The ISO 45001:2018 enables organisations to provide safe and healthy workplaces by preventing work-related injury and ill health, as well as by proactively improving its OHS performance.

Upholding the workers wellness and wellbeing is one of FPCL’s six key organisation values (Employee Wellbeing and Diversity).

For FSHIL, the ISO 45001:2018 certification was a stepping stone to becoming the first ship repair and ship refit to be recognised as a class declaration – DNV GL registered. DNV GL is an international accredited registrar and classification society that is headquartered in Norway.

FSHIL was certified ISO 9001:2008 in 2015 and was renewed to ISO 9001:2015 in 2017.

FPCL chief financial officer Roshan Abeyesundere opened the workshop and reminded the 45 participants on the important role they play for the organisation.

He said the organisation entrusted the participant with the responsibility of ensuring that the risks were managed well and that it complied with the expected OHS standard.

The training was conducted by acting director of the Sri Lanka Standards Institution, Nayana Gunathilaka.

Sri Lanka Standards Institution is the prominent national standards body in Sri Lanka and is affiliated as a member to the International Organization for Standards since its inception in 1964
