A POLICE officer who allegedly obtained a benefit while employed as a public official was bailed for $2000 by the Suva Magistrates Court yesterday.

Sevuloni Nakalevu appeared before Magistrate Kashyapa Wickramasekara, charged with one count of receiving a corrupting benefit.

The alleged offence happened between January 1 and January 31, 2016 on Koro Island, Lomaiviti.

It was alleged that while being employed as a public official, the Mr Nakalevu allegedly obtained a benefit of an outboard motor engine (60 Hp Yamaha) for himself or another person and the receipt of such benefit would tend to influence the exercise of his official duties.

His lawyer Jitend Reddy informed the court yesterday his client was a police officer by profession and knew the law.

He told the court the accused would now be based at the Levuka Police Station while he waited for the outcome of his application for a transfer to Nakasi Police Station.

Mr Wickramasekara ordered the accused not to reoffend while on bail and also imposed a travel ban against him.

The matter will be called again in April.
