ODPP reveals rape figures

THE Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions last month prosecuted more than 11 serious sexual offence cases, where four victims were under 18 years of age.

In the recent rape and sexual offence statistics released by the ODPP, it stated that apart from one marital rape case, the office also received several rape cases where the victims were closely related to the accused persons.

The statement issued by the ODPP stated that five people were slapped with rape charges for allegedly raping family members.

In incidents highlighted by the ODPP, it stated that a 48-year-old man was charged with two counts of rape on his 16-year-old granddaughter, a 37-year-old man charged with two counts of rape with his 16-year-old niece as the alleged victim and a 40-year-old man charged with raping his 14-year-old niece.

The ODPP stated that a 35-year-old man was charged with one count each of rape and indecent assault of his 16-year-old sister in law.

“There were six people charged with a total of 11 separate incidents in December. The offences were rape, indecent assault and sexual assault,” the statement said.

“There were five victims of the 11 separate incidents of whom four victims were under the age of 18 years.”
