ODPP: 14 charged

A 38-YEAR-OLD woman was charged with the alleged rape of her 25-year-old female flat mate in the Western Division last month.

This was revealed in the Rape and Sexual Offences statistics released by The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) for March.

According to the statistics, 14 people were charged with 26 counts of separate incidents of sexual offences last month, 19 of which were rape cases, two indecent assault cases and five sexual assault cases.

Three accused persons charged with rape offences were under the age of 18 years.

The statistics highlighted a 15-year-old allegedly raped his 9-year-old cousin while two 14 year olds were charged with the alleged rape of an 8-year-old girl and a 10-year-old boy in separate incidents.

There were 14 victims from all separate incidents, eight of which were under the age of 18 years.

The ODPP also highlighted that there were four incidents where the victims and the accused were related.

In one incident, a 24-year-old man was charged with the rape of his 16-year-old stepsister in the Northern Division while in another incident of alleged marital rape, a 38-year-old man allegedly raped his 38-year-old wife. The man was also charged with two counts of assault causing actual bodily harm.

A 21-year-old and an 18-year-old were charged with the alleged rape of a 14-year-old girl and an 11-year-old boy who were neighbours with both accused persons respectively.

The statistics also revealed an incident where a 26-year-old man was charged with the alleged rape, sexual assault and the abduction of a 12-year-old girl while another 23-year-old man was charged in relation to the alleged rape and sexual assault of a United States national.

According to the ODPP, the matter was withdrawn due to the inability to locate the victim.

Three cases were withdrawn after discontinuances (nolle prosequi) were filed.

“One of the cases was discontinued due to a false complaint and the other two were discontinued due to the victims not being located.”
