Oceania exhibition officially opened by the Duchess of Sussex

An exhibition, dubbed ‘Oceania' has been opened by the Duchess of Sussex in her first solo royal engagement since marrying into the royal family.

LONDON, 27 EPTEMBER 2018 (SBS) – An exhibition, dubbed ‘Oceania’ has been opened by the Duchess of Sussex in her first solo royal engagement since marrying into the royal family. She and Prince Harry will tour Australia and the Pacific next month.

The artefacts originate from New Zealand, Tahiti, Fiji and other islands. Experts say most of the pieces were gifted or traded by Islanders, but acknowledge that is not the case with every artwork.

“They were, in most parts, acquired in friendly circumstances. Obviously we know some were taken by force, but generally, the exhibition also sort of traces that story of collecting, what people were collecting and why and when,” says Adrian Locke from the Royal Academy of Arts.

The effects of colonisation are a key theme of the exhibition.
