THE defence relationship between New Zealand and Fiji stretches back to the First World War when Fijians elected to enlist into the New Zealand Expeditionary Force and subsequently served alongside New Zealanders overseas.
The relationship has continued to the present day with the response to Cyclone Winston in 2016 a major example of the enduring relationship.
New Zealand and Fijian defence personnel continue to train together in New Zealand and Fiji. This partnership ensures that the service personnel of both nations are the best prepared they can be to deploy to the peace keeping missions around the world.
Historical example: Ratu Tiale Bau Mara Vuiyasawa enlisted in Auckland and was attached to the 4th Maori Reinforcements which sailed for Egypt in May 1916. Ratu Tiale served in Egypt and France with the Pioneer (Maori) Battalion and returned to Fiji after the War in 1919.
