Members of the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) conducted a humanitarian aid and disaster relief response exercise at Lomolomo Beach in Lautoka this morning.

The live exercise displayed the New Zealand military’s disaster response capabilities with state of the art machinery carried onboard the Royal New Zealand Navy ship HMNZS Canterbury.

More than 300 NZDF traveled to Fiji as part of the exercise carried out for the first time in the Pacific.

NZDF Five Movements Company’s Lieutenant Callum Wilkie said the exercise was carried out by the Amphibious Beach team for the HMNZS, which prepared landing sites for the military humanitarian relief teams.

“Our role is to prepare the reconnaissance and prepare the beach to move logistics and troops to the shore for a variation of roles, which could be humanitarian aid and disaster relief or some form of land combat operation,” he said.

A second exercise by the NZ Air Force will be carried out this afternoon.
