NURSES need training in oncology and palliative care, says Lautoka Hospital nursing unit manager Ana Raramasi.

While speaking at the MIOT International Cancer Conference in Nadi, Ms Raramasi said there was no formal training for palliative care and oncology for nurses.

“There are no registered oncology or palliative nurses,” she said.

“There are no programs introduced in the two nursing institutions in Fiji for specialised training in oncology and palliative care.

“We are general nurses who practise independently in collaboration with other health professionals and perform general nursing functions.”

She said for nurses in Lautoka, they worked in collaboration with doctors to give the best care for oncology patients and those undergoing palliative care.

“For the goal of our palliative and oncology care for the Lautoka Hospital, it is the cancer palliative cases.

“We assist people who are dying, maintaining quality level of physical, emotional, social and spiritual life during their remaining time, no matter how many limitations are imposed by the advanced disease.

“For oncology, we assist patient’s choice of chemotherapy by providing relevant information and assist in the administration, monitoring toxicity and nursing side effects.”
