North holds one third of national forest cover

THE total forest cover area for Vanua Levu is estimated at around 382,055 hectares or around 35 per cent of the total national forest area.

Officiating at the National Forest and Rural Fire Management Strategy consultaitons yesterday Commissioner Northern Jovesa Vocea said native forests made up around 82 per cent of this total forest cover.

“This is followed by Fiji Pine Limited and Mahogany plantations and mangrove at 8 per cent, 7 per cent and 3 per cent respectively,” he said.

“The development of the strategy will not only address soil fertility issues but also catchment protection, livelihoods through agroforestry and economic returns from production forests.”
