FIJI’S Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum says there is not a single Fijian doctor that is a specialist in carrying out a cardiac open heart surgery in the country.

He made the comment while speaking at the Christian Mission Fellowship (CMF) gala dinner at the Holiday Inn in Suva last night.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said the reason behind this had been the fundamental lack of investment in Fiji’s education sector.

“For years, the medical fraternity in the country has been neglected,” the A-G said.

“Today in Fiji, if you have to become a doctor in the public health sector, they have the opportunity to carry out Post-Graduate studies.”

He said the Government actually paid for those studies because they wanted to develop specialists.
