SCHOOLS will remain closed until there is confirmation that Fiji is COVID-19 free, says Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama.

He said there were fears in some quarters that the virus could spread very quickly if schools reopened.

He made the statements while addressing villagers of Taunovo on the island of Vatulele during a visit this week.

Mr Bainimarama told the villagers there were presently three active COVID-19 cases remaining and the patients were in stable condition.

Villagers were also informed that patients who have successfully recovered from the ailment are being monitored.

He said more than 130 Fijians were in government-designated funded facilities around the Nadi area.

He urged villagers to continue to practise social distancing, avoid large meetings and to continue washing their hands with soap and water.

Mr Bainimarama said people who lived in the maritime and interior parts of Fiji were fortunate the pandemic had not spread to the areas.

Government, he said, would continue to monitor COVID-19 restrictions in order to ensure the safety and wellbeing of Fijians.
