No daily milk supply to schools

Minister for Education Dr Mahendra Reddy has confirmed that milk distribution to Year 1 students across the country will not be done on a daily basis.

Instead the milk, which is 250ml per child, will be distributed to schools in bulk with the schools having to organise for storage space and its daily distribution.

“The Ministry of Finance will select who the distributors will be based on the expression of interest. They have a guideline,” Dr Reddy said.

“We are not sure of it but we can’t do it on a daily basis, it is impossible, we don’t have to do it,” he said.

“It is uneconomical to do it on a daily basis and also the milk packs will have a shelf life of more than a month, the small packs storage won’t be an issue.”

The free milk initiative was mooted by the FijiFirst party which promised 250ml milk to every Year 1 student in the country.

The project is worth $2.5million.
