A CONGOLESE national who is alleged to have murdered his wife was yesterday denied bail by the Suva Magistrates Court.

Kiala Maracellino Henri Penakoy Lusaka, 39, appeared before Magistrate Asanga Bodaragama.

The alleged incident occurred last month at their home at Service St in Suva where the suspect allegedly murdered 44-year-old Jennifer Downes.

Magistrate Bodaragama, prior to transferring the case to the High Court, informed the suspect that the offence committed was an indictable offence.

He also told the suspect that he could file for an alibi defence within 21 days.

However, the suspect told the court that he was unemployed and was on a visitor’s visa which expired on August 22.

He notified the court that he would be engaging a private counsel to represent him.

Police prosecutor Sitiveni Bale objected to bail for the suspect.

Mr Bale informed the court that the result of the post-mortem examination was yet to be obtained.

The case will be called in the High Court in Suva on August 26.

Meanwhile, Ms Downes was a logistics officer for the United Nations World Food Program in the Pacific.
