STUDYING in a field dominated by men did not deter Shayasta Nisha’s dream from accomplishing her goals. The 21-year-old graduated with a Certificate II in Automotive Mechanical Engineering from the Technical College of Fiji’s Navua campus.

During the course of her studies, Mrs Nisha said one of her greatest challenges was finding work attachment as most automotive companies did not want women to work for them.

“I couldn’t find a place for myself while I had to do my industrial attachment because the company owners of garages and the automotive industry, they didn’t want any female because it was an environment where males were usually working,” Mrs Nisha said.

However, she was given the opportunity to conduct her work attachment at Valelevu in Nasinu.

“After spending a whole day in Suva City looking for a place that would accept me for work attachment, I finally got a place in Valelevu, W.M Motors Ltd, and I have to travel every day from Navua to Valelevu,” she said.

Mrs Nisha acknowledged her husband and family for their support and also the Government for introducing the Tertiary Education Loans Scheme (TELS).

She advised women to always live up to their dreams, work hard for it and ignore those who doubted women’s capabilities.
