More than 700 farmers around the country are planting mushrooms, according to the China-Fiji Juncao Technology Demonstration Center.
Centre spokesperson Tian Lele said at this week’s World Food Day and National Agricultural Show the project was established in 2014 and had been in operation since.
“This is a co-operative and technical project between the two governments of Fiji and China,” she said.
The centre uses Juncao technology, which helps cultivate grass for the positive production cycle of mushrooms, animals and plants.
Ms Tian said the team in charge of the project was a regular participant at the annual agriculture show.
The successful harvest of the grass used for farming and raising livestock in Fiji has brought many benefits for consumers.
Two commercial farming enterprises involved with the institute are the Navuso Agriculture Technical Institute and Votualevu College.
Ms Tian said farmers faced certain challenges planting these mushrooms, but the institute had invented ways to overcome these.
She said some of those include planting mushrooms in shady areas rather than in an open area.
The market price for these mushrooms is between $15 and $25 per kilogram.
