New rules planned for NGOs in PNG

PORT MORESBY, 27 MARCH 2019 (THE NATIONAL) – Activities of all civil society organisations (CSOs) throughout Papua New Guinea will be monitored and coordinated through a policy.

Youth Religion and Community Development deputy secretary, Joe Itaki, told The National that the policy would require all CSOs, also known as non-government organisations (NGOs), to be registered.

He said the CSO policy was now being prepared and would given to the National Executive Council next month.

“After the policy is launched, then all the activities of existing and foreign NGOs would be coordinated and guided by that policy,” Itaki said.

“We are calling on all NGOs throughout the country to register their information, areas of specialty, where they are located, their profiles, so that we will now deal with genuine NGOs that are in existence in the country.

“We are working with National Planning to coordinate and the control mushrooming of too many NGOs. We do acknowledge all the efforts of NGOs, but we want to coordinate the efforts and also get government to support properly.

“There are so many NGOs in the country. Some are genuine while others are not. We need to keep a database record of all these organisations so we can work with them,” he said.
