A village elder of Nakida Village in the district of Nagonenicolo deep in the interior of Naitasiri will soon see his dream to have a road constructed up to his village become a reality.

The construction of a new road linking the village to Nawaisomo Rd was still underway. Semi Senokonoko said they had been requesting for the construction of a new road to their village for decades.

“Its like a mana from Heaven,” the 75-year-old said.

He said they would trek through rugged terrain for three to four hours to Nabulini in Wainibuka or on bamboo rafts for four to five hours to catch a bus.

“Another route is that we have to also walk or travel on horseback for hours to Nakorosule where we can catch the bus to Vunidawa or Suva.”

He acknowledged the Government for addressing the plight of villagers.

He said some people from their village had relocated to other villages.

“Our elders were forcefully relocated to Nakorosule and Waibalavu in 1910, and in 1968, some of them decided to returned to Nakida to re-establish the village and utilise the land belonging to the seven mataqali of the yavusa Navucu.

“Once this new road is completed, the rest of our people still living in the two villages will be relocated to Nakida and land for their relocation has already been identified.”

Minister for Infrastructure Jone Usamate was the first Government Minister to travel up to the village in a car last Friday.
