New road on Koro Island

THOUSANDS of Koro Islanders are all smiles after the completion of the new Koro Island road by the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA).
Nabasovi Village spokesperson Mikaele Matata said the new road would make transportation easier to their farms and for the students to school.
“Koro Island has seven primary schools and one high school and previously the students had to trek to reach their schools which was difficult for them,” Mr Matata said.
“We are grateful for the new and improved road and we thank Government and FRA for providing us with a much safer and easy access.”
Meanwhile, FRA’s chief executive officer Jonathan Moore said the efforts were better valued considering that Koro Island was one of the many islands badly affected by Severe Tropical Cyclone (TC) Winston.
“The 16km road will improve the quality of life of the rural population through the provision of basic weather road access to all the villages in a cost-effective manner and to promote economic growth by reducing rural transport costs,” Mr Moore said.
Mr Moore said the project was completed last year but due to damages by Severe TC Winston, additional repair works were carried out on the island.
