A NEW biomass power plant worth $US35million ($F64.9m) will be established in Navutu, Sigatoka, offering energy options for residents in the Western Division.
The energy project will be headed by Tropik Gimco Bioenergy, a company formed by Tropik Wood Industries Limited and Korean power generation plant engineering company GIMCO.
Speaking at the ground-breaking ceremony yesterday, GIMCO chairman Sang Sun Lee said the plant would supply about 12 megawatts of energy.
He said the company was willing to assist the Fiji Electricity Authority.
“FEA is aiming to provide clean and affordable energy solution to Fiji with at least 90 per cent of the energy requirements through renewable resources,” he said.
Chief guest Minister for Fisheries and Forests Lieutenant Colonel Inia Seruiratu said the project would decrease Fiji’s import of fossil fuel.
“Fiji is heavily dependent on imported fossil fuel for producing energy, fuel and transportation this investment is timely for energy security,” he said.
