FISHERIES Minister Semi Koroilavesau says newly commissioned patrol vessel Dua Lei Ranima would allow his ministry to cover “high risk” areas and increase visibility at sea to ensure that fishermen complied with regulations.

He made the comment while commissioning the vessel at the Lautoka Fisheries Wharf on Tuesday.

“By now, you should already be aware of the high risk areas within the Western Division and much needed surface patrol that needs to be exercised,” he said.

“In addition, as part of our 2022 strategic priorities, we should use this opportunity to engage and work with communities and fishing association to strengthen MCS (monitoring, control and surveillance) and enforcement.

“By engaging communities, we will not only increase the scope of the service we will provide but, more importantly, it will enable us to see through the different payers of fishing communities to boost voluntary compliance.”
