Construction work on the 150-bed non-COVID field hospital in Lautoka began yesterday at Nadovu Park. Commissioner Western Mesake Ledua said the field hospital would be expected to be fully operational by this weekend.
He said they worked closely with the Ministry of Health and Medical Services to set up the makeshift hospital.
“We hope to have it operational by tonight but there has been some delays but we can assure everyone that it will be operational very soon,” he said.
“At this point in time, the MV Veivueti is now operational at the fisheries wharf and will be taking in maternity cases.”
As announced by Ministry of Health and Medical Services permanent secretary Dr James Fong, the field hospital and Government medical carrier vessel were part of the Fiji Emergency Medical Assistance Team (FEMAT) which was activated to support the ministry’s healthcare management strategy within the Lautoka containment area.
Dr Fong said the field hospital would enforce strict COVID screening and security to ensure it was a COVID-free facility, while the Lautoka Hospital remains exclusively a COVID care facility.
