New FNRL clubs

THREE new clubs will feature in the Fiji National Rugby League Vodafone Zonal competition after the launch of the competition at the FNRL headquarters in Suva yesterday.

The clubs are Nausori Bulldogs, Suva Islands Eagles and Waidroka from Galoa, Navua.

FNRL chief executive officer Timoci Naleba said the club competition played an important role as they had set the plan for the next Rugby League World Cup.

“We will have 10 weeks of competition every week and we want to give prominence to the zone competitions as we want to reward the clubs seeing their players who have given their time and effort to make it to the zone competition.

“Vodafone has been with Fiji National Rugby League since 2005 and they have renewed their sponsorship for another four years and the contribution of Vodafone towards the development has been tremendous. Most of the players are sponsored and given contracts to play in Australia and England.

“I have told the clubs that we are going to plan for the next four years with the intentions to see more locals in the Fiji Bati squad.”

Naleba said with the effort from the players and the clubs the rugby league would grow.

“We want to make rugby league a sport which is the first choice sport for every Fijian and that is our vision. We are not going to be the second choice, but the first choice sport for every Fijian,” he said.

The competition was expected to start this weekend depending on the weather.
