GOVERNMENT has given a twenty year veteran of the copra industry a new drier which Minister for Agriculture Inia Seruiratu commissioned recently.
A government statement sent earlier today describes how the government support will help Biraj Nand boost copra production on an estate he owns at Dawana Bay in Cakaudrove.
The 75 hectare coconut plantation should now be able to produce half a tonne more than usual every month.
“I used to have an old drier but because it was small, I only produced 1.5 to 2 tonnes of copra every month. This new structure will help boost production which can get me 3 tonnes per month,” the 65 year old said in an interview.
Mr Nand has been involved with the copra industry for more than 20 years, possessing a 75 hectare coconut plantation.
Mr Seruiratu was quoted commending Mr Nand.
“Coconuts are in high demand throughout the world now because of the high quality products that can be made from them and of course taking into account its numerous users due to factors such as technology,” Minister Seruiratu said.
“I would like to encourage you to keep up the good work and also assure you that the Government through the Ministry of Agriculture will be there to provide the necessary assistance,” Minister Seruiratu said.
