JAPANESE Ambassador Kawakami Fumihiro will officially hand over two classroom buildings at Nasau Central Secondary School in Ra to Education Minister Aseri Radrodro tomorrow.
The Japanese Government provided $540,134 for the construction of the buildings, under Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) Programme.
In a media brief, the Japanese Government said it heard of the eight villages in the Tikina of Nasau and no secondary schools in the area until Nasau Central was established in 2018.
The nearest secondary institution, Ra High School, is located about 25km away, and Navesau Adventist High School about 30km away.
Nasau Central Secondary School students were previously accommodated at Nasau District School.
Because of the increase in the school roll annually, the learning space for students had become congested and it was difficult for teachers to conduct classes. In response to the situation, the school used other existing facilities as classrooms, but it was not adequate and conducive to learning.
For that reason, the Government of Japan funded the construction of two new buildings (five classrooms and one staffroom) at the new school site for Nasau Central Secondary School and provided necessary classroom furniture (150 sets of desks and chairs for students and five sets of desks and chairs for teachers).
The Japanese Government said the facilities would not only provide the students with the opportunity to study in a conducive learning environment, but also ensure that there is a reliable evacuation centre for the surrounding communities.
