New Caledonia edges Samoa in important clash

Two distinct styles clashed at the Handy Finance Oceania Volleyball Championship in Suva yesterday, as New Caledonia triumphed over Samoa in a hotly contested men’s tournament match.
The energy and physicality of the Samoans proved no match for New Caledonia’s flair and poise, as the men in red ran out 3-1 winners.
Samoa brought plenty of aggression and noise to the Vodafone Arena, managing to intimidate their opponents early on and forced some errors as they took the first set 25-21.
However, New Caledonia stuck to their strategy and continued to play patient volleyball, eventually taking the three sets 25-20, 25-23, 25-22.
With both sides being highly-touted in the buildup to the tournament, the result sees New Caledonia take an important step towards progression on to the later rounds, where they may well face a Fiji White side that are unbeaten thus far.
Meanwhile, in the women’s competition New Caledonia beat Kiribati in straight sets, 25-9, 25-12, 25-17, while Tuvalu edged Samoa B 3-2 in a five set thriller, 25-18, 13-25, 23-25, 25-19, 15-13.
