A NEW auditor-general’s office was opened in Nadi last month to monitor a number of important government sectors, Auditor-General Ajay Nand said.

“We wanted to have a greater visibility in these areas because sometimes our presence promotes accountability,” he said.

“Our officers are able to go to these government offices and carry out their audits thoroughly rather than have a more desktop type of auditing.”

He said the Western Division in particular had sectors that received a large portion of government funding.

“The sugar industry is one industry that receives a lot of government funding.

“So we need to ensure that the money provided by Government is utilised well and for the benefit of the farmers.

“We also have the tourism sector and the aviation industry which has Fiji Airports and the Civil Aviation Authority of Fiji.”

The new office is located at Namaka, Nadi.
