CANE farmers residing at Rakavidi Settlement in the interior of Tavua can now have access to improved road services with the construction of a new Irish crossing.

The $95,000 project was spearheaded by the Ministry of Sugar after concerns were raised by farmers about difficulties faced to transport cane to the mills.

Director Sugar Industry Sanjay Kumar said prior to the construction, residents had to cart cane across the river.

He said upgrading the cane access road was also difficult because contractors did not wish to ferry materials on bad roads.
