Netball gold for Fiji

THE Fiji Pearls remain the queens of netball in the Pacific as they ousted Papua New Guinea Pepes 68-51 in the Pacific Games final in Port Moresby to clench the gold medal.

The Power Dome was packed as the home side was playing. The lively home support seemed to have put more energy into the Pepes.

The game started with both teams exchanging points but Fiji better defence saw the team pull ahead.

At half time the Fiji’s side sat on a 10-point cushion which by the end of the game Fiji had increased to 17 points.

The points difference however does not reflect the intensity of the game. The Pepes made Fiji work for their win.

PNG coach Unaisi Rokoura said Fiji was the better team but PNG would bounce back.

“It was a well deserved win for Fiji, but PNG maybe down but we will bounce back and become better in the future,” she said.

Fiji coach Kate Carpenter was pleased with the win and even happier that the team had been able to retain its title.

“The girls were marvellous in attack and defence. Their fitness stood out. I am happy with the progress they have made,” she said.

“PNG was a tough team to play against and I wish them all the best in the future. For us, we turn our focus to the World Cup.”
