Netball Fiji says the inaugural Fiji Netball Men’s Championship later this month is being held to recognise the contribution of men’s netball to the sport.

Netball Fiji CEO Vivian Koster said the championship, which will be held on May 20-21, would be exciting to watch.

“It is played with skill, passion, energy and elevation. It is why men’s netball teams are the preferred training partners for the national team, the Fiji Pearls,” Koster said.

“This championship is one way to recognise the contribution of men’s netball to the overall netball family.

“Netball is already known for encouraging women and girls in sport but inclusivity is multi-directional.

“Through this tournament we acknowledge our men and boys that compete, coach, manage and those who are technical officials.

“We encourage more men and boys to take up netball.”

Fiji Pearls coach Unaisi Rokoura said they had invited a men’s team to help out in training for the Fiji Pearls and the under-21 extended squad.

She said playing against men provided the squad members a higher level of competition.

“We have invited the men’s team to choose their best players and come and challenge the girls,” she said.

“We want to replicate our performance and let the girls put in to action what they have learnt during training.”

Fiji Netball Men’s Championship, which will be held at the Vodafone Arena in Suva, will see eight teams competing.

Matches will be held from 3.30pm to 9pm on Friday, May 20, and from 10am to 4pm on Saturday, May 21.

Ticket prices are $5 for adults and $3 for children (12 years and under).
