NEPHROLOGIST specialist at the CWM hospital Dr Amrish Krishnan says kidney dialysis patients in Viti Levu are still paying up to $250 for their treatment at private dialysis units.

Dr Krishna who was now working with the Ministry of Health and Medical Services, and is being assigned to develop the Government’s kidney dialysis unit, said the new $75 initiative would come into action in Viti Levu once the national centre was opened in Nadera.

He said kidney dialysis patients were paying $220 at the private hubs.

He added the $75 kidney dialysis treatment subsidised cost was only effective for those in Labasa.

“As soon as the national centre opens, they will be able to access this assistance and for now, it is just Labasa,”‘ Dr Krishna said.

At least one patient interviewed, former taxi driver Avinesh Murgessar, he spends $1760 on treatment every month.
