The Fiji Association of the Deaf (FAD) says it is unfortunate people are making negative comments about interpreters, especially when they do not understand how sign language works.

The association also stated negative comments on social media about interpreters who were conveying critical messages at this time was “a clear indication that deaf people’s lives don’t matter”.

The association stated sign language used visual-manual modality to convey meaning.

It stated the use of synchronised facial expressions, body language, hand movements and space was used to articulate context of the spoken language.

FAD stated sign language interpreters were skilled professionals that worked for the deaf in Fiji.

“Our interpreters in that space support the Government of Fiji in saving lives ensuring ‘no one is left behind’ in information dissemination in all COVID-19 responses,” FAD stated.

“We are grateful for the many positive feedback we have received.

“To our interpreters, you are saving lives. You are ensuring that we are given the relevant information as and when it is announced.

“You may feel sometimes you are scrutinised for your work. To us, you are true professionals because you all stick by your code of ethics, not allowing the negative comments to get the better of you. Continue the good work.”
