There is a need for more professors to teach at the University of the South Pacific to lift the quality of education provided to children in the region.

Speaking during the announcement of USP’s restructure plan yesterday, executive director finance Kolinio Boila said the institution had some of the lowest rates of professors in the academic stream because they needed more money to hire senior staff.

Mr Boila said said only 4 per cent of academics teaching at USP were professors.

“This year, we are forecasting more decrease in contributions with the Fiji Government announcing withholding 11.5 million,” he said.
