NDMO to test tsunami sirens

THE National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) in collaboration with the Seismology Unit of the Department of Mineral Resources will be conducting a live test of all the tsunami sirens at 10am tomorrow (June 5, 2019).

The live test will continue until 11am on the day.

This test is part of the Government’s commitment towards improving its state of readiness for any tsunami event, and to also ensure the sirens are in working conditions.

At present, the tsunami sirens are installed in the following locations:

1. Water Authority of Fiji – Kinoya Sewerage Plant

2. FINTEL – Vatuwaqa

3. RFMF Officers Training School – Vatuwaqa

4. USP Statham Campus

5. USP Lower Campus

6. USP Main Campus

7. My Suva Park

8. Government Training Centre – Nasese

9. I Taukei Trust Fund Board Office – Nasese

10. Civic Car Park Rooftop

11. Government Shipping Services – Walu Bay

12. Biosecurity Suva Operation Office – Renown Street (near Suva Bus Station)

13. Lami Town.

The NDMO has advised members of the general public that evacuation is not required.

However, the NDMO is urging communities and businesses to use this exercise to identify and test their evacuation procedures following their designated safe routes to the safe assembly areas/zones.

It stated that it was equally important for members of the public to get acquainted with the sound of the tsunami early warning sirens.
