BEING a first in the country, the Naweni Kindergarten in Cakaudrove has been shortlisted for a prestigious design award in the leading British publication, The Architects Journal.

With its eye-catching architecture, the building’s design was chosen as part of The Architects Journal’s Small Projects Shortlist for 2018, considered a big honour for any architect.

The kindergarten was designed and built by CAUKIN Studio, a UK-based group of agriculture students, Naqaqa Giving Foundation (NGF), and the people of Naweni Village.

NGF and CAUKIN Studio then worked together to raise donations to fund materials and arrange volunteers from around the world to travel to Fiji and help construct the stunning building.

NGF’s executive officer Max Cross said volunteers worked six days a week building side-by-side with those who lived in the district and those whose children now attended the school.

“Amazingly, they began building at the end of July 2017 and were finished by mid September 2017,” Mr Cross said.
