Nawaka rugby honours its best players

EXPECT the rise of a new star from the rugby ‘crazy’ village of Nawaka in Nadi. The village has produced some of the finest rugby players in the past such as the late Sainivalati Laulau, Manasa Qoro, Esala Labalaba, Api Naevo, Semisi Naevo and Savenaca Aria to name a few.

On Friday night, upcoming star and looseman Richard Derenalagi was named the Nawaka Rugby most improved player and the player of the year.

Derenalagi who is the son of former national 7s rep Sailosi Nawavu said the award had motivated him to continue working hard and join the renowned rugby players in Nawaka.

He said he was honoured to receive two awards.

“I am blessed to have been born in the village some of the top rugby players were born,” said Derenalagi.

“The award will inspire me to work hard and follow the footsteps of these great players including my father. “I believe all rugby players have dreams and are working hard to fulfil them. “I have also set my goals and working towards it. I am not surprised with this award, the bigger things are yet to unfold.”

Derenalagi was part of the Fiji Warriors squad member but was later dropped.

Chief guest and Paradise Beverages general manager sales and corporate affairs Joe Rodan congratulated all award winners and encouraged the players to lift the sport to another level.

Other awards: Most Improved player – Richard Derenalagi, Most Disciplined player – Jolame Nasuku, Most Punctual player – Maikeli Qoro, Best Captain of the year Esava Qoro, Most games played 2017/18 Maikeli Qoro, 7s player of the Year – Rosivela Dresu, 15’s player of the year – Serupepeli Momo, Backs Award for the Year – Visamaki Lagilagi, Overall player of the Year – Richard Derenalagi, Age groups U19 – Samuela Uqeuqe, U17 – Ponopate Lesavua, U16 – Josefa Kunagodo.
