FROM the $1000 prize purse and three cartons of beer sponsorship back in 1987, the Fiji Bitter Nawaka 7s has grown in proportions now with a prize purse of $40,000 and 50 cartons of beer on offer for the 34th edition of the tournament.

It kicks off at Prince Charles Park in Nadi this morning.

The inaugural tournament attracted about 20 teams, however this weekend’s event will feature 90 teams across four categories making it one of the biggest 7s carnivals in the country.

Nawaka Rugby Club executive Jeff Tamata said the success of the tournament was because of its proper organising over the years.

Tamata said they had a good partnership with major sponsor Paradise Beverages creating a special bond.

“It is not only about what goes on the rugby field, but also bringing people and communities from different walks of life together,” he said.

“Many tournaments started but died out over the years, however the Nawaka 7s together with the Marist 7s have blossomed each year.

“This speaks volumes about the commitment of the executives, the support of the vanua and our goal of always reaching out to the grassroots clubs.”

The Fiji shadow 7s teams, Fiji Barbarians and Fiji Warriors have been included in the main draw.

Tamata highlighted their support towards the national 7s team.

“Whenever they have asked to be part of our tournament, we have never let them down,” he said.

“We have never turned them away unlike some other tournament organisers.

“This is because we support the Fiji 7s team in their quest to build the best combinations in order to win the major titles overseas.”
