Former Opposition MP Niko Nawaikula will spend two years behind bars.

The matter was called for sentencing in the Anti-Corruption Division of the High Court in Suva today.

On May 3 this year, High Court judge Justice Thushara Kumarage found Nawaikula guilty and convicted him on one count of giving false information to a public servant and one count of obtaining a financial advantage.

Justice Kumerage sentenced Nawakula to an aggregate sentence of 36 months imprisonment, meaning part of it will be spent in prison and the remainder suspended.

He will spend 24 months in prison with a non-parole period of 18 months.

The remaining 12 months have been suspended for five years.
