The Republic of Fiji Navy celebrated 46 years of service on July 25 marking an important milestone for the military agency.
In his anniversary address, Fiji Navy Commander Captain Humphrey Tawake said since its inception in 1975, the Republic of Fiji Navy has a rich history in the defence of Fiji’s maritime boundaries.
“As we celebrate the RFN’s 46th anniversary as individuals or in your bubbles with COVID-19 in our midst,” he said.
“We must acknowledge the sacrifice, hard work, and commitment of all our frontline workers across all sectors and communities who are engaged in protecting our vulnerable communities from this deadly virus — coordinating, responding and supporting those that need medical help and providing security for those in quarantine isolation.
“I also pay tribute to the families of the frontline workers who have sacrificed so much more to allow their loved ones to be on the frontline, away from home for weeks and working tirelessly day and night to protect others against this unseen enemy.
“Furthermore, our deepest condolences to the families and loved ones who lost families, friends, workmates and loved ones to this deadly virus.”
Captain Tawake also acknowledged the sacrifice and service of their pioneers.
“Their leadership and vision has provided the RFN solid foundation to build and progress on over the years.
“We pay tribute to those who served in the Fiji Naval Volunteer Reserve embedded with the Royal New Zealand Navy in World War II and our founding leader and commander, Captain Stanley Brown, officers and sailors for their sacrifice and service. Some have paid the ultimate sacrifice with their calling such as OS Savenaca and OS Puamau who died onboard HMNZS Leander in WWII.
“Today we remember them all wholeheartedly for their sacrifice and selfless service.”
