THE Nauru weightlifters are using the 2019 IWF Junior World Championships as preparation to the Pacific Games.

Coach Saul Detenamo said majority of their athletes would take part in the Pacific Games next month in Samoa.

“This competition will provide a platform for our young lifters and also a training process for our athletes who will take part in the Pacific Games,” Detenamo said.

“For our young athletes, we want them to experience this championships as a learning curve.

“We want them to learn and gain more knowledge and understanding of how to compete at the international level.

“We have been preparing for this championships for a year and a half and we know what to expect from other athletes.

“Our weightlifters came prepared and were looking forward to compete and learn from some of the best from around the world.

“We are here to gain more experience and improve on our personal best times. Build on their confidence and strengthen their training abilities. Come the Pacific Games we are ready.”

The championship which started last Saturday is expected to be more competitive in the coming days in the heavier divisions.
